Weather: what 2023 will be remembered for. Forecast for the New Year

National Weather Service Director Thodoris Kolidas reviewed the weather for 2023.

In his post on social networks, he mentions all the phenomena that worried us regarding the weather in the past year, just before welcoming the new one, 2024. We are talking about specific weather phenomena, often extreme. The message is accompanied by the following comment: “What weather phenomena marked the year 2023? This is a year of many days of snow from Hurricane Barbara, the intense heat in July of Kleonas and the heavy rains that hurricanes Daniel and Elias brought in September.”

As for January, the expert notes that it was quite warm. On the contrary, it was cold for February. Temperatures fluctuated in March and April; May and June were cooler than usual, but July was a very warm month with temperatures 2–3.5 degrees above normal. In August there were also fluctuations in air temperatures, and September made history for record rainfall, mainly in Thessaly.

The 15-year record also includes October 2023 with the highest temperature of the season. We also had high temperatures for the season in November, with actually record highs for the month. This also applies to December.

EMY director Theodoros Kolidas also announced the weather forecast with which we will celebrate the New Year. And also about the weather conditions that will prevail in the first days of the new year. “After the New Year and especially towards the middle of next week the weather looks like it will change with heavy rain. Today’s data shows that air temperatures, on average, will remain above normal for the season,” said the EMY director, presenting the corresponding graphs.
