Yesterday, December 21, the Israel Defense Forces announced that it had destroyed a large network of Hamas tunnels hidden under Palestine Square in Gaza City.
The Times of Israel reportsthat senior Hamas officials were hiding in this underground network when the group launched its offensive into southern Israel on October 7, according to the military. The tunnels connected homes, offices and hideout apartments, including hiding the elusive leader of the group’s military wing, Mohammed Deif, and the top Hamas official in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar.
The IDF has been scanning the tunnels and receiving intelligence information from them in recent days, the report said. The military said the tunnels were destroyed by the elite Yahalom engineering unit and the 401st Armored Brigade.
