Thunderstorms, rain and even snow – a sharp deterioration in the weather over the weekend

Since today, bad weather has hit Greece; in Attica, residents woke up to the sounds of rain and thunder.

Today, December 16, weather forecasters’ forecasts are confirmed – a sharp deterioration in the weather with rain, thunderstorms, snow and a drop in temperature over the weekend.

Snow is expected in the mountains and foothills, as well as in the northern regions of Greece at low altitudes. The cooling, which is already felt in northern Greece, will also occur in the central parts of the country – the temperature will drop by 6-8 degrees.

Heavy rain and storms are forecast in the east of the country in the first half of the day. In the west there will be a gradual weakening of bad weather. Snowfall, heavy in places, is expected in the highlands and foothills, but will taper off by the evening.

The decrease in temperature will bring with it a gusty northeasterly wind: first in the central and northern parts of the Aegean Sea, from midday gradually throughout the Aegean Sea its strength will be 8-9 points on the Beaufort scale. On Sunday 17 December, gale northerly winds will remain at Beaufort 8 until midday in the northern Aegean and overnight in the central and southern Aegean.

Frosts are expected in northern Greece over the weekend, with heavy frosts expected in the north-west on Sunday. Temperatures in most parts of the country will range from 5°C to 13°C.
