A tanker in the Red Sea was attacked by a cruise missile

The Houthis hit a tanker in the Red Sea with an anti-ship cruise missile from Yemen.

She got it writes Reuters, citing a statement from the US military, hit a commercial tanker, causing damage and a fire, but there were no casualties. The attack on the STRINDA tanker occurred about 60 nautical miles (111 km) north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, around 2100 GMT, a US official said. Another source said the tanker was able to move under its own power several hours after the attack.

In a statement, the US Central Command, which oversees US forces in the Middle East, said:

“There were no US ships nearby at the time of the attack, but the (US Navy) destroyer USS MASON responded to STRINDA’s alarm and is currently assisting.”

The chemical tanker is owned by Mowinckel Chemical Tankers and flies under the Norwegian flag. STRINDA loaded vegetable oil and biofuels in Malaysia and was en route to Venice, Italy, according to data from ship surveillance company Kpler.

The pro-Iran Houthis have intervened in the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has spread to the Middle East since October 7, attacking ships in vital shipping lanes and firing drones and missiles at Israel itself. Last Saturday, the Houthis warned that they would attack all ships traveling to Israel and warned international shipping companies against operating at Israeli ports.
