Rhodes is overrun by migrants, the authorities are terrified

It is estimated that the total number of new immigrants on the streets of Rhodes these days is around 70, including small children, with some of them setting up tents outside the post office in the city center until the process of transferring them to refugee reception centers located in other regions of the country.

There are many children among refugees and immigrants. In their statement, members of the public organization “Elafi – a self-organized movement of citizens” report on the situation in the city center regarding immigrants:

“From 4.12.2023 the number of people on the island began to increase again. The information we are receiving says that they will still arrive in the coming days. On December 4, 2023, we counted 50 men, women and children in Termai. The day before yesterday there were already 200 people there, and they headed to the police station demanding that they be allowed to transit to other places where migrants and refugees are being held.

The day before yesterday we distributed 80 lunches, blankets, jackets, shoes, socks. Some people were barefoot, some were wearing short sleeves (inappropriate for the weather). However, everything, as usual, was thrown away. People did not take advantage of the donations. However, they need:

  • Blankets.
  • Shoes from size 44 and above.
  • Children’s socks.
  • Shoes 2 pairs size 25.
  • Cookies (croissants).
  • Juices.
  • Fruits.
  • Buns.
  • Breadsticks.

Donations can be made by contacting the civil solidarity group “Ελάφι – Αυτοοργανωμένο κίνημα πολιτών” on social networks. Activists call on the Rhodes authorities to register and feed our brothers in need.

“We demand to be informed that from today and for as long as necessary, the municipality will take full responsibility for feeding the refugees. The weather forecast calls for rain. People sit right on the ground, in the park under the trees. Families have babies. We insist from the very beginning that the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum or the South Aegean Region or the municipality provide them with temporary housing for a few days. But no one listens to us!” says the statement of public activists and concerned citizens.
