ΙΝΣΕΤΕ: more than 2 million people arrived in Greece in October


October, considered “off-season,” this time surprised and pleased experts. According to the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), the number of arrivals in October was 2 million, an increase of 11.0% compared to October 2022 and 24.5% compared to October 2019.

There were 23.0 million international air arrivals between January and October 2023, exceeding the same period in 2022 (up 11.5%/2.4 million arrivals). Compared to the period January-October 2019, growth is estimated at 12%.

All records are once again “broken” by Athens: from January to October 2023, 6.3 million international flights were registered at Athens International Airport (an increase of 1.4 million/28.4%). It is followed by Thessaloniki Airport, which recorded 2.1 million international air arrivals (an increase of 355 thousand/20.3%).

The Cyclades recorded 1.3 million international air arrivals, a decrease of 100 thousand/7.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2022. The Peloponnese recorded 201 thousand arrivals, which is 7 thousand/3.2% more. In Crete, the number of international flights reached 5.0 million, an increase of 271 thousand (5.8%).

The number of international flights at Dodecanese airports reached 4 million (an increase of 142 thousand/3.7%). The Ionian Islands recorded an increase of 262 thousand/7.9% and recorded 3.6 million international air arrivals.

Road tourism
In October, 544 thousand arrivals were recorded, which is 11 thousand / 2.0% more than last year and less than 38.5% than in 2019.

There were 9.5 million international vehicle arrivals between January and October 2023, compared to 7.2 million between January and October 2022, representing an increase of 33.1%/2.4 million in vehicle arrivals and a decrease of 14.4% compared to 2019.

In the period January-October 2023, an increase in arrivals of travelers from all neighboring countries was recorded compared to the corresponding period in 2022. In particular, the largest increase in arrivals was recorded for citizens from Bulgaria (1.5 million/57.1%), with 4.2 million arrivals by road registered.

It is followed by Turkey, where growth was recorded by 339 thousand/50.8% with 1.0 million arrivals by road. The increase in visitors from North Macedonia amounted to 324 thousand/12.8%, with arrivals by car of 2.9 million. And from Albania the increase was 190 thousand/14.7%, with arrivals by car up to 1.5 million people.

Travel checks
Travel revenues showed an increase of 15.2% for the period January-September 2023 compared to the corresponding period in 2022 and amounted to 17.919 million euros. Compared to the same period in 2019, an increase of 11.3% was recorded. This development is due to an increase in revenues from residents of EU-27 countries by 11.7% (9.982 million euros), as well as revenues from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 18.3% (7.459 million euros).

Financial receipts from residents of eurozone countries amounted to 7.989 million euros, an increase of 12.0%. Receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area showed an increase of 10.5% and amounted to 1.992 million euros. In particular, the amount of receipts from tourists from Germany increased by 4.4%, amounting to 2965.7 million euros, and from France – 1291 million euros (10.6%).

From countries outside the EU27, receipts from the UK showed an increase of 6.8%, amounting to €3.015 million. Revenues from the United States increased by 13.5%, to 1.116 million euros, while revenues from Russia decreased by 23.8%, to 28.0 million euros.

Greek champion hotels
In October 2023, Greece ranks first in the overall hotel satisfaction index (GRI) with a score of 86%. In second place is Cyprus with 85%, and in third are Italy and Spain, with 84%. It is followed by Turkey with 83%, and France in last place with 78%.
