In a few months, the world is again expected to experience extreme weather events. Scientists warn that El Niño will cause floods and extreme heat in early 2024.
The El Niño phenomenon, which caused record heat this year, continues to worsen weather conditions and will continue into 2024, the Financial Times reports. Scientists say the natural warming effect in the Pacific Ocean could cause global temperatures to rise in the short term. They warn that shifting warm ocean waters will cause flooding and extreme heat in early 2024. writes FT.
Companies in various sectors have warned of disruptions in the supply of goods and logistics. El Niño is expected to last until at least April next year, the World Meteorological Organization said, with its secretary-general Petteri Taalas saying:
“This year is already the warmest on record, but 2024 could be even warmer than 2023. Extreme events such as heat waves, drought, wildfires, heavy rainfall and flooding will increase in some regions with serious consequences.”
