Thessaloniki: a tug keeps the destroyer “Βέλος” from sinking (video)


Strong winds and huge waves created a threat of sinking the historical destroyer “Βέλος” in the port of Thessaloniki.

The Velos crew was alerted. A tugboat rushed to the aid of the anchored destroyer, which kept the ship stationary.

Later, it was reported that a crack had developed in the lower stern of the historical destroyer ship and floating museum of the Navy “Βέλος”, which was tossed by raging waves due to strong winds. The same damage, but of a smaller extent, was caused to the ship in March, during similar bad weather.

The diver who is there today, Sunday, will dive into the water despite rough seas to determine whether the lower part of the destroyer is damaged, and thus build an overall picture of the damage.

Bad weather has been raging in Thessaloniki since Saturday morning. tells Thestival.gr, the waves in Thermaikos Gulf are crashing onto the beach with fury, and strong winds are knocking down rare passers-by.

The storm’s winds caused more than 40 trees to fall, mostly in the west and east, and caused property damage to buildings and vehicles. The wind reaches 8-9 points on the Beaufort scale, and blows at speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Since early morning, fire service units have been working tirelessly in various parts of Thessaloniki, where trees have fallen, causing damage to parked cars and fences.
