Weather warning from the Greek Meteorological Service ΕΜΥ

A powerful cyclone approaching Greece from the north/northwest, accompanied by a front of cold air, will cause a sharp deterioration in the weather over the weekend, with gale force winds across almost the entire country, localized heavy rain and thunderstorms in the north and east of island Greece. Temperatures in the north of the country will drop by 6-8 degrees.

A. Gusty northwest winds of force 8-9, with gusts up to 10, will blow from the afternoon of Saturday, November 18, to the west and gradually to the east. From the afternoon of Sunday, November 19, the wind will gradually weaken.

B. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast from early Saturday morning until the afternoon of the same day in the Eastern Aegean, Dodecanese and temporarily early morning in Thrace.

What other meteorologists say

Meteorologists predict the worsening weather will be short-lived and temperatures will rise again next week, continuing the Indian summer of the past few weeks.

A meteorologist with state broadcaster ERT3 said there would be “severe cold from north to south from Saturday, with it being more noticeable in the mountainous and northern regions of the country.” According to his forecast “The first snow will fall on Mount Parnitha in the northwest of Athens and Attica.”

According to the forecast of another meteorologist, the temperature in the north of the country on Sunday will not exceed 14-16°C, while in the south it will fluctuate between 16°C-18°C. The events are expected to ease by the end of Sunday.

Note: Stormy winds may affect maritime traffic, so check with local port authorities and travel agencies for information.
