Palestinian arrested for betting Greece "under threat of reprisals"

Greek police arrested a Palestinianwho climbed onto a lantern displaying a Palestinian flag during a pro-Palestinian rally outside parliament on Sunday.

The 22-year-old climbed onto a lamppost and attached a pole with Palestinian and Greek flags to it. A video of his actions was later circulated on social media.

Police said they have identified and detained a Palestinian man who raised his country’s flag during a rally in Syntagma Square.

A Palestinian citizen seen in a video circulated on social media raising his country’s flag during a rally at Syntagma on Sunday, November 5, 2023, has been identified and arrested.

The police first reported that the man had been detained, later announced his arrest, but did not specify what criminal charges would be brought against him, apparently awaiting… a political decision. The Minister for Citizen Protection first announced the “arrest” of a man for“that he hung a Palestinian and then a Greek flag on a pole.”

After a thorough investigation by @hellenicpolice, the man who raised a Palestinian and then a Greek flag on a pole on Sunday during a demonstration in Syntagma has been arrested. The arrested person appeared in court. The Greek police, in a particularly complex and eventful environment, act wisely and effectively, within the bounds of the rule of law and democratic norms.

A few hours later, the media, citing Greek police, reported that the man was arrested under the provisions of Article 141 of the Criminal Code for exposing the Greek state to “the risk of sanctions or disrupting friendly relations with an ally.”

“Whoever, by his intention and any actions, exposes the Greek State, its ally or its inhabitants to the danger of reprisals or violates the friendly relations of the Greek State or its ally with a foreign state.”

PS Spanish shame… It’s hard to believe that the conservative government of Greece is afraid of “repression” from Israel or even a violation of deep-rooted friendly relations, especially when people hold dozens of Palestinian flags at rallies, or when a former ND minister is forced to formally apologize to Jews for , which denied the Holocaust. However, such a decision makes us think about the prevalence of political interests over legal issues, as well as about the role of Israel in the current world. However, these moments in Greece have long been an “open secret”…
