Migrants from Italy will be resettled in Albania

To resolve the migrant problem, Prime Ministers George Meloni and Edi Rama agreed to send migrants arriving in Italy via the Mediterranean Sea to Albania.

At an official meeting, the prime ministers of the two countries decided to jointly manage migration flows. Refugee camps will be opened on Albanian territory for migrants, in which, at the initial stage, it will be possible to accommodate 3,000 people, writes euronews. Migrants rescued at sea will be sent there first.

The Italian prime minister says the initiative will help relieve chronically overcrowded detention centers for asylum seekers. This year alone, according to official data, 144,000 people arrived in Italy by sea, that is, twice as many as in 2022. Jorja Meloni says:

“Initially, these facilities will be able to accommodate up to 3,000 people. They will remain there while the asylum claim is being processed, until, of course, repatriation or return.”

However, this initiative also has opponents. They believe that monitoring whether conditions of detention in those located outside EU camps will be quite difficult. Migrant centers could become “Italian Guantanamo.”
