Arrest of a Palestinian who hoisted his country’s flag next to a Greek one at Syntagma


A video has circulated online showing a young man climbing and raising the Palestinian flag on Syntagma, next to the Greek one.

In a statement, Greek police said the 22-year-old Palestinian citizen, who was “captured in a video circulated on social media, raises his country’s flag during the Syntagma rally on Sunday 5 November.” The man was identified and detained by law enforcement officers, police said:

“Early on the morning of Tuesday, November 7, 2023, a 22-year-old Palestinian national, seen in a video circulating on social media raising his country’s flag during a rally at Syntagma on Sunday, November 5, 2023, was identified and taken into custody. A criminal case has been opened against him, the preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Attica Sub-Division.

According to ΕΛ.ΑΣa Palestinian resident brought to the police station on Tuesday morning, was charged under Article 141 of the Criminal Code, which reads: “Whoever, by his intention and any action, endangers the Greek state or its allies or the inhabitants of the country, and exposes, endangers friendly relations of the Greek state or its ally foreign state, punishable by imprisonment for a term of three months to three years. If the offense actually occurred due to the actions of a specifically identified person, he faces a minimum of three years in prison.”

What did the Minister of Citizen Protection say? Yiannis Ikonomou said in a post on social networks that “the man who hoisted the Palestinian and then the Greek flag on a pole on Sunday has been arrested.” The minister states that the person arrested will be brought to justice.
