Ukraine will refuse Russian gas transit in 2024

At the end of 2024, after the expiration of the contract, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will stop – it will not renew the agreement.

Chairman of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Alexey Chernyshev said in an interview with Radio Liberty that the gas transportation contract will not be extended. In addition, as the head of Naftogaz noted, the Russian Federation is not fulfilling the terms of the contract, and Ukraine is already ready to refuse gas transit. He noted:

Gazprom does not pay under its contract in the direction of the Sokhranivka GIS (which is actually located in the occupied zone), so Naftogaz does not receive enough funding to actually ensure transit, but fulfills its obligations regardless of this, filing claims against Gazprom “to fulfill his obligations.”

Ukraine continues transit solely to support its European colleagues, says Chernyshov:

“There are no other reasons, but we cannot deprive today some EU countries, which, by the way, are our partners, of the opportunity to receive blue fuel and prepare for winter.”

He added that EU plans to completely abandon the consumption of Russian gas until 2027, therefore does not insist on the continuation of Ukrainian transit, writes publication “Economic Truth”.

Earlier, NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine filed a petition for arbitration with the International Court of Arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paris regarding the actions of PJSC Gazprom. The company demands funds from Gazprom for the services provided in organizing the transportation of natural gas through the territory of Ukraine, which were not paid on time and in full.
