In Greece, as in many other countries, the phenomenon of mileage rollover, mainly on imported used cars, is a problem that worries both buyers and authorities.
Buyers attracted by the prospect of purchasing a vehicle with lower mileage and better fuel economy may unknowingly purchase a vehicle that has been subject to significant use and wear and tear. This problem is created by sellers who fraudulently underestimate the mileage of cars in order to increase their market value. This practice, in addition to deceiving buyers, also creates serious safety problems since a high-mileage car may require repairs or replacement of some important components.
The Greek authorities are trying to combat this phenomenon in different ways. On September 26, 2019, the government, by ministerial decree, adopted an important amendment to the law after it was once discovered that the vehicle being tested had mileage is falsified. The inspection was stopped and the owner was required to correct the odometer reading within 20 days and then be re-inspected again.
As it turns out, when checking this car, the actual mileage returned by the history cross-check program is almost 654,000, and the odometer shows 227,000 kilometers.
