Changes in visa-free travel rules in the EU

The European Commission plans to tighten the rules of the visa-free regime in connection with the current geopolitical situation.

How tells BB.LV, last Wednesday, in order to strengthen control over visa-free countries, the EC proposed to review the current procedure for suspending the visa-free regime and tighten its rules.

Today, the European Union has a visa-free regime with sixty countries that are not members of EU. This is beneficial from an economic point of view, promotes the development of tourism, but it also has negative sides – it facilitates illegal entry into the European Union.

For example, says the press service of the European Commission in Estonia, in some countries investors are granted citizenship for their financial contributions, which allows them to enter the European Union without a visa.

So the change in the geopolitical situation has brought a whole host of problems, including those related to the visa-free regime and hybrid threats, for example, state-sponsored exploitation of migrants.

In its proposal, the European Commission adds new grounds for suspending the visa-free regime: hybrid threats or cases where the visa policy is not sufficiently coordinated with the EU visa policy.

It is planned to introduce a new accelerated procedure for emergency situations, as well as tighten monitoring and reporting rules for countries that have previously experienced problems.
