Russian LNG ranks second in terms of imports at Revitus (infographics)

Most European countries have restricted imports of natural gas from Russia through the pipeline network or Gazprom has stopped supplies to countries such as the Balkans, but this does not apply to Greece.

Hellas, despite the active anti-Russian rhetoric of the country’s leadership, actively imports and sells Russian gas to its neighbors who previously refused Russian gas, earning decent money from it.

Greek edition FROM published data from the operator of the national natural gas system (DESFA) on the progress of gas imports and consumption in the country and its export through the national gas transmission system.

Russian LNG

As official DESFA data for the nine months of 2023 show, at the Revitus terminal for the storage and gasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG), tankers with Russian LNG became one of the main suppliers.

In fact, the share of Russian LNG volumes that reached the terminal on Revitus Island amounted to 26% of total imports. The energy value of the cargo is equivalent to 6.27 TWh (terawatt-hours).

American LNG retained its leadership – 38.9%. The volumes were at the level of 9.36 TWh, but they are constantly decreasing – the reason is the high price…

Russian LNG volumes ranked second in market share over the nine months, with these cargoes apparently benefiting from a 49.91% year-over-year decline in U.S. cargo volumes and a 24.82% decline in imports from Algeria ( they amounted to 2.97 TWh). LNG imports from Egypt increased by 50.45%.

Market sources note that Russian LNG is returning to previously lost markets as it is supplied at competitive prices. According to reports, the cargo that arrived in Greece was destined for both the Greek market and export to Balkan markets.

It is worth noting, as market officials also note, that Moscow has found a new way to market with the export of LNG cargoes, since there are no restrictions set by Brussels for these volumes.

Sidirokastro

At the same time, the volumes of Russian gas from the national gas system and, in particular, from the entry point to Siderokastro are decreasing, although they exceed the volumes of LNG cargo. More specifically, for the nine months of 2023 Russian gas volumes were on the level 16.18 TWh, although down 30.7% compared to the first nine months of 2022.

Volumes of Azerbaijani gas supplied through the TAP pipeline amounted to 9.66 TWh and decreased by 22.94% compared to last year.
