“The pandemic, of course, played a role, but we have to look at long-term trends, and they are extremely worrying.” – said the prime minister.
Although demographic decline is a problem that affects the West and almost all developed societies, and is associated with modern lifestyles, “in Greece, however, there are special conditions, – he said. – The truth is that today our people are one of the oldest in Europe. Over the past five years, the number of Greek women aged 20-40 has decreased by 150 thousand people as a result of a decline in fertility that actually began in the 1980s.”.
According to him, the decline in population is not uniform across the country. “It peaks in certain areas, which means that national strategies are not enough, local provisions are also needed, since the general demographic collapse is literally becoming an existential bet on our future.”

He asks what is the point of Greece finally emerging from the financial crisis, showing very high growth rates compared to other European countries, reducing unemployment and its population having disposable income“if at the same time the shadow of decline spreads over future Greek women and men.”
The creation of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Families was a response to this challenge, he said. The Prime Minister also spoke about the need to harmonize professional life with family life, take care of public health so that older people remain active, and create many good jobs for young people so that they can build their lives in their country with good prospects.
