Olive oil: systematic testing for its protection, advice to consumers

Systematic inspections and sampling of olive oil standardization plants, wholesalers and retailers are carried out by the Unified Food Inspection Agency (EFET).

EFET staff report that they are prepared to process reliable documented reports and complaints received by them. The service works in cooperation with other competent authorities.

The Agency mentions the above in its statement regarding serious concerns regarding adulteration of olive oil. The number of reports/complaints submitted to EFET is increasing.

The statement emphasizes that “olive oil adulteration is a fraud that causes financial loss to consumers and businesses, and can pose a threat to public health. Fraud undermines consumer confidence, threatens the orderly functioning of markets, and has serious consequences for legitimate trade and business.”

To protect yourself from fraud, EFET recommends that consumers and businesses:

1. Purchase olive oil only from legal and therefore controlled points of sale.

2. Study the olive oil label especially carefully, which should contain at least the following information about the product:

  • olive oil sales category (EXTRA VIRGIN, VIRGIN, OLIVE OIL),
  • alphanumeric number of the standardization unit (EL-40-_ _ _),
  • data of the supplier, the person responsible for the business.

3. Avoid buying olive oil from street vendors (unauthorized) and anonymous sellers.

4. Check company data with special care when you intend to buy oil on the websites of manufacturing or commercial companies. Reliable suppliers must have all guarantees and licenses to supply branded olive oil.

5. Consumers purchase branded olive oil in pre-packaged containers with a maximum capacity of 5 liters. And legal entities and enterprises (restaurants, hospitals, canteens and other similar facilities) are supplied with branded olive oil in packages of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 liters.

6. Make sure that when you receive your olive oil, you obtain legal tax receipts for your purchase.

7. Select suppliers carefully from those who have information that guarantees their reliability (factory address, production capacity, validity of invoices and other documents) and the legitimacy of the purchase and sale process.

8. Contact EFET immediately by phone 11717 or via the website https://www.efet.gr/index.php/el/consumers/ilektroniki-ypovoli to submit a report or complaint in case of incomplete data in the labeling, too low (tempting) price or poor performance of the enterprise.

9. Pay attention to the organoleptic characteristics of olive oil (taste, smell, color, etc.). If something confuses you or raises suspicions, contact EFET.
