"Krapopolis": Diaspora Greeks ask FOX to remove "offensive" series

The leading American organization for the protection of Hellenic heritage, Order of AHEPA, sent a letter to Fox Entertainment asking them to stop production of the animated sitcom “Krapopolis”.

The action of the series with the vulgar title “Krapopolis, shit-city!” (“Krapopolis,” Crap-city!), released late September 2023, takes place in mythical Ancient Greece. The series centers on a broken family of humans, gods and monsters who try to rule one of the world’s first cities without killing each other.

However, the animated sitcom featuring an “immoral family” involved in murder, infidelity, a frivolous lifestyle and numerous other abominations did not appeal to the Greek diaspora.

The series “Krapopolis” received mixed reviews from the entertainment industry. However, the leading Hellenic Heritage Association has been unequivocal in its opposition to Fox’s new animated show.

American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) National President Savas C. Tsivicos has sent a letter to Fox Entertainment Executive Vice President Jean Guerin asking him to halt production of “Krapopolis.”

“We believe this series disparages the contributions of the ancient Greeks to Western civilization,” writes Tsivikos. “These contributions, which also included art, architecture and science, and ideals including democracy and the right to self-government, inspired academics, playwrights and scientists, as well as revolutionaries, including our country’s founding fathers, throughout the centuries.”

Tsivikos also requested a meeting with Guerin to discuss the problems of the Greek-American community and the potential harmful effects of Krapopolis.

While the irony of the ancient Greeks performing satirical comedies as far back as 500 BC remains relevant, we firmly believe that “Krapopolis” crosses a line that is offensive to our community and perhaps others. Our goal is to establish a constructive dialogue with the channel and, hopefully, with the producers of the series, to find out whether there are ways for further development.”
