Investigation into the largest olive oil theft

An olive oil cooperative in Polygyros in Halkidiki reported more than 50 tons of oil missing on Tuesday morning, October 3.

The alleged theft, according to representatives of the Polygyros olive oil cooperative, occurred in warehouses where the cooperative’s stocks of products are stored. Members of the production floor couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the empty barrels. But we are talking about the theft of 52 tons of olive oil! According to preliminary estimates, the damage exceeded 370 thousand euros.

There are reportedly about 200 local producers registered with the cooperative. The management filed a lawsuit for theft because the cost of the oil was very high.

According to preliminary data, the theft did not occur over 3 days, but occurred gradually. In fact, the attackers visited warehouses and slowly drained the oil. Until it ends… It became known that last year about 20 tons of olive oil disappeared from the same warehouse.

He spoke about this case on the MEGA TV channel olive growers’ lawyer Thanasis Giovanoudas.

“I represent olive growers who were members of the cooperative here in Polygyros, Chalkidiki, and we do not agree with the position of the cooperative. Suddenly on Monday, the production workers who went to the warehouse for oil, which, by the way, was guarded, did not have a drop left in the barrels! The next day, the cooperative reported that there had been a theft over the weekend, which the olive producers did not agree with. It may very well be that vegetable oil was gradually sold “on the sly,” he said.

Mr. Giovanudas mentioned that the olive growing side believes that oil theft has occurred.

“We think it was done through a co-op, but we just can’t say who did it. They produced a quantity of 400-500 kg or 1 ton and sold it. There’s no way this could be done in a weekend.. The cooperative is located on the outskirts of the village. There was no movement seen at any of the houses adjacent to the co-op over the weekend of the theft. None of the cameras recorded any movement on the days the theft was reported.

Tax documents and invoices have been handed over to the police. We intend to deal with this through legal means.
