Ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which was approved by parliament, could seriously worsen Armenia’s relations with the Russian Federation.
Opposition factions boycotted the discussion and then voted against it, writes euronews. The Armenian authorities say that ratification is the country’s sovereign right, guarantees security, is not directed against Russia and makes it possible to bring to justice the Azerbaijani military who committed crimes on the territory of Armenia.
The Kremlin previously stated that ratification of the ICC statute would be a hostile decision for Moscow, and the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of negative consequences for bilateral relations.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted (X), quotes “European truth”:
“I welcome the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court by the Armenian Parliament. Armenia has joined the 123 states committed to the rule of law.”
