Resignation of US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

On October 3, both parties of the United States of America in the United States dismissed the Speaker of the US House of Representatives – for the first time in the history of the country.

After the vote, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy left Congress, ignoring journalists. Patrick McHenry from North Carolina will replace him on an interim basis. A vote for a new speaker will take place next week, Republican lawmakers noted.

Republican Matt Gaetz launched the process to remove McCarthy on October 2 by filing a petition. The House of Representatives was supposed to consider it within two days.

On the evening of October 3, members of the US House of Representatives voted to remove Speaker of the Lower House of Congress Kevin McCarthy from office. The decision was supported by 216 people, 210 voted against.

The Radical Republicans, along with Matt Gaetz, said they were doing this to convince McCarthy not to rely on Democratic votes to pass any spending legislation. They accused him of failing to live up to his commitments to fellow Conservatives on effective governance strategies.

All this happened against the background of the threat of a shutdown. Then Speaker Kevin McCarthy introduced a temporary budget bill to avoid a US government shutdown. However, the House of Representatives voted against the proposed law on September 29.

The resignation of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives due to a voted resolution is the first in US history. A similar case happened more than a hundred years ago, in 1910, but then some of the powers were taken away from the speaker, which were later returned.

Kevin McCarthy served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives for 9 months – this is the shortest period in the history of the United States of America.

Will aid to Ukraine continue after the speaker’s resignation? National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said at a briefing that aid to Ukraine will not stop, despite the House decision. According to him, most members of the US Congress are in favor of transferring aid. He confirmed that there are indeed a few very active Republicans who oppose aid to Kyiv, but they do not represent either the party or its leadership.

At a press conference, Kevin McCarthy said that he had not entered into an agreement with the White House on additional assistance to Ukraine, but supported the arming of Kyiv.
