Fifty-five Chinese sailors appear to have died after their nuclear submarine was caught in a trap designed to lure British submarines into the Yellow Sea. According to a secret British report, the sailors died as a result of a catastrophic failure of the submarine’s oxygen system, which led to poisoning of the crew. Among the dead is the captain of the submarine “093-417” of the PLA Navy, as well as 21 other officers. Officially, China denies that the incident took place. Beijing also apparently refused to request international assistance for its stricken submarine. The British report on the fateful mission states the following:
“According to intelligence, on August 21, while performing a mission in the Yellow Sea, an accident occurred on board. The incident occurred at 08.12 local time and led to the death of 55 crew members: 22 officers, 7 cadets, 9 petty officers, 17 sailors. Among the dead were – captain of the ship, Colonel Xue Yong Peng. According to our data, death occurred as a result of hypoxia caused by a malfunction of the submarine system.
The submarine collided with a chain and mooring obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap U.S. and allied submarines. As a result, a system failure occurred, which took six hours to resolve and the vessel to surface. As a result of a catastrophic failure of the on-board oxygen system, the crew died from asphyxiation.”
