From electric scooters to mopeds, from car batteries to tires, they have been found and recovered from the bottom of the Thermaikos Gulf.
During the work, divers dived into the waters of Thermaikos Gulf, lifting various heavy and even large objects from the bottom. At the same time, a special crane was needed to lift some of them.
In addition to the vehicles, divers, whose team included former international basketball player Lazaros Papadopoulos, recovered bottles, tables and chairs, tires and various other items from the bottom.
The underwater cleanup campaign, organized by OLTH SA with the participation of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), Antipollution, Hellenic Environmental Center SA (HEC) and MEPP, was attended by 280 students from secondary schools and EPAL Thessaloniki. The children had the opportunity to gain practical educational experience related to environmental protection and the marine ecosystem.
OLTH SA President and Managing Director Athanasios Liagos said that “for the first time, underwater cleanup is being carried out at Pier 1 with the participation of the public and especially schoolchildren, which makes us happy. We are here today to tell future generations how important it is to clean up our seas and protect the environment in general.”
For her part, the press representative of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) Evdokia Gerasimo explained that the action is aimed at raising awareness of the younger generation: “Let’s not forget that we have a responsibility to protect the environment.”
