Thessaly: "We are destroyed forever"say the locals

Magnesia, Larisa, Karditsa and Northern Evia found themselves defenseless against the autumn rains due to the lack of flood control work. And after 20 days that have passed since the previous catastrophe, they are waiting for the evil to end, because of which the whole of Thessaly has fallen behind in development by 40 years.

Areas were left without electricity, houses and businesses were “submerged” in muddy water, villages were cut off, cars were washed away.

If ministers, regional governors and mayors think only about their pockets and not about implementing projects for the benefit of citizens, then what we see now and what we saw twenty days ago happens.

Because every time we are told that because of “climate change” the trees have burned and the soil has not been able to absorb water, because it is because the trees have burned that we end up with floods.

This is not so, as is clearly seen in the example of Thessaly and especially Magnesia. The question in a normal state is: who goes to prison first? However, in Greece everything is different. Politicians resign to take up a new position in just a couple of months…

Volos has been “suffocating” since yesterday evening, and South Pelion is left without roads

In Volos, thousands of families will spend a second night in a row without electricity or water, many muddy businesses did not open on Friday, and thousands of workers will have difficulty getting to their workplaces due to problems with the road network.

The emergency situation is also evidenced by 1,520 calls received by the fire service’s operations center from Wednesday morning to 6 pm on Thursday. The Craydinosas River overflowed its banks for the second time in 20 days, leaving the town flooded with mud.

Someone must be held accountable for what happened – why flood protection work was not carried out, resulting in the prefecture of Magnesia being flooded, not to mention wider Thessaly.

It was flooded just three weeks ago, and yet they have the nerve to talk about unprecedented rainfall while trying to cover up their criminal inefficiency by citing the “climate crisis.”

And why didn’t the Prime Minister’s friends report to the residents of the prefecture about the almost half a billion euros allocated to them for flood control work? And where are these works? So far, only the results of the fact that these works have not been completed are visible. The prosecutor’s office needs to open a criminal case into the deaths and material damage caused as a result of negligence and corruption.

And they must be open against all officials holding positions who, as part of their duties, were responsible for and control these areas of work. Moreover, responsibility should be not only political, but also criminal.

Volos villages will remain without water for a week to 10 days

Answering a question about the overcrowding of Kraysidonas and Xyria, and whether they had been cleared, the prime minister said that, on the one hand, this is… the responsibility of the periphery, asking for a change in the regime and transfer of responsibility to the municipalities.

At the same time, in Pelion, mud covered everything and the road network suffered many disasters. According to Thesstoday, today from Chorto to Milina and Platanias the picture evokes tears of despair: destroyed roads, tons of dirt, screams of victims.

Footage of destruction in Volos

At the same time, Volos has serious problems with water supply and the road network. Ano Volos is cut off for transport as bad weather has caused serious damage to the road network.

In several places, the asphalt split in two, landslides occurred and power poles fell. On the city ring road leading to the villages of Pelion (Makrinitsa, Portaria), the Anavros River overflowed its banks, causing significant damage to the road network. Parts of the roads “disappeared” after rushing waters washed away the road surface, cutting off communications between local communities.

Cars were trapped on the banks of the river and almost completely buried under tons of mud and debris. In the municipality of Almyros, the greatest damage occurred in the Pteleos area, especially in Agios Dimitrios, Achilleion and Pteleos. Agria Volos received the largest amount of water from the floods of the Kraisidonas River.

The entire area towards Agria, Ano and Kato Lechonia, as well as the entire South Pelion, remains cut off from roads due to the complete destruction of the road surface.

Cars are under tons of dirt and debris.

Beautiful idyllic areas, the only ones in all of Greece where mountains and sea combine in such a beautiful and picturesque way, areas that have been spared the concreting, lost in the mud of lies and political deceit. The Achillopoulio Hospital in Volos also suffered significant damage: basements and other rooms were flooded, fortunately not the departments where patients are hospitalized.

Up to two meters of muddy water reached the village of Sotirio in Larisa

The village, which also suffered in the first “wave” of autumn rains, was evacuated on Wednesday evening, but five people refused to leave and remained. Even though the water level remains at dangerous levels, they have reportedly been moved to a municipal store in the village as they refuse to leave, and boats will be used to provide them with food and water.

Much of northern Evia remains without electricity and water due to network damage caused by tornadoes overwhelming it. The greatest problems are observed in Roviesa, Mandudi and Kimasi.
