The political declaration, approved by world leaders at the UN General Assembly, includes an ambitious global goal: to defeat tuberculosis by 2030.
To achieve this, the declaration includes immediate plans, which include:
- coverage of 90% of people with tuberculosis prevention and treatment services;
- providing benefit packages to all patients;
- licensing of at least one new vaccine.
General Assembly President Dennis Francis noted with satisfaction:
“The political declaration just approved today reflects the importance of a whole-of-community, whole-of-government approach and provides evidence-based recommendations to end tuberculosis by 2030.”
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said tuberculosis had killed more than 1 million people in 2021, mostly in poor countries, calling it a “disease of inequality.”
Our publication previously reported that the President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) approved a non-binding declaration on pandemic preventionPreparedness and Response (PPPR) without a full vote in the assembly and over the objections of 11 countries, including Russia.
