SYRIZA elections: the number of voters exceeded 100 thousand

The turnout in the second round of elections for the new SYRIZA leadership was impressive: from morning to 16:00 the number of voters exceeded 100 thousand. The winner is expected to be announced at 10 p.m.

CNN Greece Edition calculated: If this pace continues, up to 160,000 people will be able to take part in the process – 280 voters vote every minute. This means that the “indicators” of the first round (148,821) can be surpassed.

Shortly after 17:00 in the afternoon, Alexis Tsipras went to Kaysariani to vote for the new president of SYRIZA. Previously, two candidates for the SYRIZA leadership exercised their voting rights: Efi Ahtzioglu in Egaleo and Stefanos Kasselakis in Nea Smyrni.

Polling stations for the SYRIZA re-election opened at 08:00 am and will remain open until 20:00 pm.

Voting at the polling station, Stefanos Kasselakis said:

“Thank you to everyone who has voted so far. We still have time, the ballot box was empty this morning, and everything will be decided today. Thousands of people are the guarantor of SYRIZA’s unity. Thousands of people are the guarantor of the modern ruling left forces that Greece needs. All of us on the front lines need to listen to them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. From tomorrow we move forward together.”

In turn, candidate for the leadership of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance Efi Ahcioglu noted:

“Today, tens of thousands of citizens who are members of SYRIZA-PS are going to the polls and sending a fundamental message that the progressive faction is here and will oppose a government that thinks it can rule with carte blanche. We are here and will be here to provide strong structural opposition to policies that marginalize society, policies that are carried out with arrogance. We are and will be here to express the needs of citizens who rightly believe that they are not living as they deserve and not as they have the right to live. I think this is a great participation for all of us, for me it is of course a responsibility and an obligation that we will be here to express the opinion of people who are looking for a different politics in this place, workers, youth, the unemployed, scientists and specialists, so that express their expectations and give them hope and perspective. I am absolutely optimistic, I believe that in any case in the evening all of us in SYRIZA will be stronger and more smiling for the next day of SYRIZA and the country.”
