Sakis Arnautoglu about floods and their consequences

Renowned meteorologist Sakis Arnautoglou is warning the government of “another big, ugly problem” that no one is thinking about yet.

We are talking about the spread of infections and mosquitoes. He says:

“No one can predict how many days it will take for the stagnant water to completely disappear. Floods could open up another big, ugly chapter—the dynamic emergence of mosquitoes and disease transmission.”

Predicting the weather for the coming days, the meteorologist writes in his Facebook post:

“Yes, no rain is expected until maybe mid-September, but temperatures will be back close to summer values by mid-day.”

And again the meteorologist returns to the topic of floods, the main one today, warning of a serious danger, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“In addition to the psychological trauma they (floods) cause, which cannot be quantified and included in the economic impact, as well as a number of significant negative changes in soil quality and productivity, floods can open up another big and ugly topic – the dynamic emergence of mosquitoes and disease transmission in areas that have been hit by unprecedented floods.

Unless there is a significant change in the forecast, there will fortunately be no rain expected until perhaps mid-September, but temperatures will be back close to summer levels by midday.

No one can predict how many days it will take for stagnant water to completely disappear. According to experts, mosquitoes lay eggs and place them on the surface of fresh water, and an increase in temperature and humidity contributes to their reproduction and increase in their number.

Therefore, in my humble opinion, due to the flooded acres in Thessaly, as well as the long-term damage to soil quality and productivity, a mosquito control program must be immediately implemented with the cooperation of all agencies, together with an approved European Union program.

But in order for it to be approved, we will have to present a comprehensive proposal for mosquito control. If something is not done in an organized manner in this direction, Thessaly will suffer and, along with the economic consequences, there will also be an impact on the quality of life. Of course, it is important to take preventive measures at the individual level too!”
