The situation in Pinios is out of control: the Girtoni dam is being broken to save Larisa

The Pinios River swells with water brought by the cyclone”Daniel“, and the first flood phenomena are already appearing and for this reason the decision was made to destroy the dams at the Girtoni dam, as shown in the tirnavospress video.

Police Director Agapios Harakopoulos, President of the Falani community – Dasohori Kostas Ligouras, Vice-President Renos Kariotis and Vice-President Pitsios Andreas are present at the work site.

Residents of Larissa and the areas through which the Pinios River passes are on alert, and evacuation orders have already been issued in some villages located in the river’s flood zone.

The Pinios River is dangerously swollen and huge amounts of water continue to flow towards Larissa. Shortly before 2 a.m., a new message was sent to 112.

“If you are in the Farkadona area, move towards Grisanos, and if you are in the Klokotos Georganades and Petroporos areas, move towards Echalia due to the possible flooding of the Pinios River.”

Residents of the Agios Thomas area in Larisa have been on their feet for hours, seeing the storm drainage network unable to cope due to high water levels in the Pinios River, causing water levels to rise in the area’s streets, threatening homes and businesses.

Larisa, it is feared, may suffer the same fate as Volos. The city with a population of 200 thousand people is also at risk of flooding.

Some residents are leaving their homes and taking shelter with relatives, while general anxiety among residents is high.

At the same time, the municipality of Larisa made an emergency announcement due to serious concerns that the Pineos River may be flooded in the city of Larisa, urging citizens to move away from the flood zone, as well as to be on alert for those in close proximity to the river.

The statement states in more detail:

“In Thessaly, intense flood phenomena are observed, which end in the Pinios river before entering the river bed in the city of Larisa. The flow of water is constantly increasing. For this reason, a warning was previously issued by number 112. This situation will continue at least for the next 24 hours and raises concerns for the safety of citizens and objects located in the flood zone of the Pinios River near the borders of the municipality of Larisa. The flood zone is defined as the area from Amidalea to Girtoni and includes the area between the embankments on both sides of Pinios.

Residents in the Pinios flood zone must evacuate immediately as there is a serious risk of flooding. The rest of the population living near, but not in the flood zone, should be on alert.”.
