Tightening the rules of the road: for which they can take away a driver’s license

The Minister for the Protection of Citizens, Yiannis Ikonomou, announced the tightening of the Rules of the Road, stressing that “numerous violations and traffic accidents on the roads of the country have become a daily occurrence that must be combated.”

The persistent traffic violations that are found daily on Greek roads are of concern to the ministry, which held a wide-ranging meeting on road safety, strengthening control and implementation of traffic rules (KOK).

As Mr. Iconomou mentioned, there are specific violations that (depending on the situation) can lead to the loss of human life. Among them: violation of the red traffic signal and stop, aggressive (extreme) driving, drinking alcohol and using a mobile phone while driving.

He also pointed to the government’s intention to increase penalties, up to permanent confiscation of a driver’s license for repeated offenses.

Tougher penalties are “vital” because violations of traffic rules carry serious risks of human casualties. “Therefore, in these cases, the imposition of an administrative fine is not an adequate solution. This is where you will have to seriously think about the withdrawal of a driver’s license,” the minister added.

Mr. Iconomou also touched upon the phenomenon speed racing on the beach of Athens Souniostating that such actions will not be tolerated as they endanger people’s lives and cause noise pollution.

The traffic police will regularly intervene in such incidents. At the same time, the official expressed the need to redistribute the potential of the Greek police to critical service departments in order to strengthen the security of citizens.
