Girkin-Strelkov remains under arrest

Despite the petitions of the lawyer and the appeal filed, the court decided to leave Igor Girkin behind bars, recognizing his stay in the pre-trial detention center as legal.

According to Russian media, the lawyers asked for a lighter measure of restraint, emphasizing that their client “does not plan to hide from the investigation and court, has positive characteristics, has received awards many times, suffers from several diseases and is actively cooperating with the investigation, providing consistent and truthful testimony.

Girkin, in turn, expressed a lack of understanding why the court of first instance chose his arrest as a measure of restraint. He explained that he had not traveled outside of Russia for a long time, was in the field of view of the special services and also recalled that he had been convicted by a court in The Hague. Addressing the court, he said:

“Why exactly now I would have to hide and where, I personally do not see in the materials of the charge brought against me and from the explanations of the investigator, despite all my rather extensive operational experience.”

Recall: as our publication reported, in Moscow detained retired FSB officer Igor Strelkov (Girkin), a criminal case was initiated on incitement to extremism. The detention of Strelkov is associated with the fact that the day before, as usual, he criticized the Russian authorities, but this time he harshly criticized the President of the Russian Federation. From the very beginning of the war against Ukraine in 2022, Strelkov has categorically opposed the military and political leadership of Russia.

The petition of the investigation to select a measure of restraint for Girkin was considered by the Meshchansky Court of Moscow. Judge Olesya Mendeleeva decided to detain him until September 18, the case was initiated under the article on public calls for extremist activities (part 2 of article 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), follows from the press service of the court. Strelkov himself offered house arrest.

And a little about the personal:
