An 83-year-old woman arrested for renting her house to illegal immigrants was released

An 83-year-old arrested resident of Rhodes was released on restrictive conditions – the payment of a cash deposit in the amount of 3,000 euros, a ban on leaving the country and a monthly appearance at the police station at her place of residence.

She was accused of providing shelter to third-country nationals who entered the country illegally on a regular basis. The old woman was arrested on August 19, 2023 by police officers of the Central Port Authority of Rhodes.

A search of her home on Amartandou Street found eight Syrians with no legal papers, and three identity cards of dubious authenticity were found and confiscated.

As part of the preliminary investigation carried out by the Central Port Authority of Rhodes, the citizen was identified as the owner of the aforementioned house, in which foreigners lived, paying twenty euros per person daily.

While apologizing, she revealed that she had cancer and never went to the authorities. She added that she has no experience with one-day rentals, nor is she familiar with the procedures and legal formalities for temporary visitors and tourists, as well as hotel rentals, since the house she rents out has always been a long-term rental.

The only reason she currently rents out this house is to supplement her pension to pay for medicines and treatments. She also argued that it had not been proven that the eight foreigners found in the house they were renting were illegal immigrants because they were found to be carrying European Union identity cards.
