Handelsblatt: the climate crisis has led to the extension of the tourist season in Greece

German media are talking about the “extension” of the tourist season in Greece due to the climate crisis.

Deutsche Welle reports that the German press is focusing on Greek tourism as well as the Turkish real estate market. The publication notes that extreme weather conditions with temperatures above 45 ° C, combined with devastating fires, caused great suffering to tourists, destroying thousands of acres of land.

Examining the possible implications of this situation for tourism, Handelsblatt Economic Gazette notes that “Greece has experienced an extreme summer so far, with the wettest June in decades followed by the warmest July since meteorological records began. In Athens, the authorities have banned access to the Acropolis at lunchtime due to the high risk of heatstroke.”

“We have always had heatwaves, but now they have become more frequent, more extreme and longer,” said Christos Zerefos, head of the Atmospheric and Climatological Research Center at the Academy of Athens.

However, HB notes that “travel agencies are already responding: many of them are now offer trips to Greece from March to November. A longer tourist season means less crowding and less environmental impact,” said Kostas Sinolakis, President of the Hellenic Science Council on Climate Change.

The scientist does not expect an immediate impact on tourism, but expects sharp long-term consequences: “It is estimated that by 2100 the Mediterranean Sea could rise by about one meter.” Thus, the Greek coasts will face “a significant problem of soil erosion as a result of human intervention and poor design of coastal structures.”
