Apartment buildings in Athens are again turning to the services of doormen. Why are they needed, and what are their responsibilities?
George Vamvakas, President of the Federation of Concierges (ομοσπονδίας θυρωρών), says that this profession used to be “closed”. To perform such duties, it was necessary to buy a license, by analogy with a license for taxi drivers. “The market price was twice as high as the cost of apartments, like taxi licenses are today,” says Vamvakos.
In Athens, Thessaloniki and Piraeus, the federation has 1,500 members, but their real number is about 4,000 people. Houses that hire doormen and cleaners have a special position in the real estate market. And insurance companies, when there are concierges in buildings, favorably reduce insurance premiums by 20%.
Concierges and porters are responsible for the normal functioning of the building in which they work and pay attention to security issues. At present, very young people are entering the profession, therefore, solid queues are “lined up” for the position, writes newsbeast.gr.
