Set profit ceiling on school supplies

The decree signed today by the Minister of Development, Kostas Skrekas, concerns the inclusion of basic goods needed by students for the school year, which are subject to a gross profit ceiling.

In total, there are 9 categories of school supplies subject to Article 54 of Law 5045/2023:

  1. school bags (satchels, briefcases),
  2. pencil cases,
  3. notebooks, notebooks,
  4. wooden or mechanical pencils
  5. colored markers / felt-tip pens,
  6. writing ballpoint/gel pens,
  7. erasers,
  8. pencil sharpeners,
  9. rulers/triangles.

For the products in question, Law 5045/2023 provides that “from the date of entry into force and until December 31, 2023, it is prohibited to receive gross profit from the sale of any product or the provision of any service that is necessary for health, nutrition, living, movement, heating, manufacturing DHW and consumer safety, as well as from sale of school supplies (and others)”.

Thus, 9 items will form the basis of the School Supplies Basket, which will come into force in August this year. Minister of Development Mr. Kostas Skrekas said: “With today’s decision, we are actually supporting the Greek family. We are setting a ceiling on the rate of return for the most basic school positions due to the new school year.

Our goal is to make school supplies affordable and even cheaper than in the corresponding period last year. In this direction, in addition to the ceiling of the rate of return, we are pioneering the School Supply Basket, an initiative in which both supermarket chains and large chains that sell a significant amount of school supplies, committed to participate, although, of course, like other shops operating in the sector in question. We are fully aware of the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable families, so we use all available means to support them for as long as necessary.”
