Tragedy in Georgia: as a result of a landslide at a resort, many people went missing, 6 people died (updated)


Near the resort village of Shovi, in the high mountainous region of Racha in Georgia, at least six people died in a landslide. The bodies of two dead were found the day before, in the morning it became known about four more victims, the Ministry of Internal Affairs informed.

According to the portal “Georgia News”, the landslide came down yesterday, August 3, at about 15:15. As a result, power lines were damaged, communications were interrupted, roads and bridges were destroyed.

According to the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze, several people were found by rescuers at night in the forest – they hid themselves in a safe place. The location of a group of surveyors, who could not be found for some time, was also established. Rescuers have not yet been able to break into the zone of cottages, which was at the epicenter of the landslide. Headquarters says:

“Where the cottages used to be, there is practically nothing… The rescuers can’t get through, they fall through.”

Rescuers say that there could have been many more victims if the landslide had come down at night or early in the morning. During the day, many went for a walk in the nearby forest, and this saved their lives.

As of 15:00, the death toll had increased. As a result of a landslide that occurred the day before in the area of ​​the resort village of Shovi, 11 people have already died. It is reported by “European truth” with reference to the TV channel Mtavari. Information about 11 dead was confirmed by the Minister of Health Zurab Azarashvili. Search work continues in the disaster area – rescuers are looking for more than 30 people. Two helicopters and about 400 rescuers are working at the epicenter.
