Kikilias: 660 fires in last 10 days, vast majority human-caused

After 10 days of more than 660 fires, today we are the first we are not in the “red zone” not in a state of alarmMinister for Climate Crises and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias said at a press conference on forest fires.

Mr. Kikilias called this period difficult, emphasized the self-sacrifice and heroism of all those who fight against fires, mentioning deaths of two pilots.

The difference with other years, the minister noted, lies in the weather conditions in which the mechanism was called upon to manage the crisis. Politicians, the state apparatus and citizens should take the new conditions seriously, Mr. Kikilias stressed.

“Never(?) have we had a map at maximum fire risk for so many days in a row, in so many regions,” the minister said. Speaking about 660 fires, he noted that most of them were managed, but ten have become large scale and have become a test of endurance.

He noted that the vast majority of fires arose through the fault of a person – as a result of arson, criminal negligence or intent. 74 people were injured, three died. Once again, the timely application of the “112” system worked effectively, he added, among other things. As Kikilias stressed, the state will do everything it must and must do to alleviate the situation of the affected people and the affected areas.

He noted that, despite the preparation, the degree of complexity was very high and added that where deficiencies or errors were found, refinement and revision would be carried out. “The climate crisis is here to stay and we must adjust our policies at all levels,” the minister said.

PS It is worth noting that such hot weather at the end of July is quite a common occurrence, and, as we showed earlier, it has been repeated on these days for many decades of observations. However, earlier the number of such fires was much less. And, without a doubt, human activity is to blame for this. It is not in our right to advise anything to the Minister of Climate Crisis, but still we would advise you to take a closer look at some strange contracts for the installation of solar and wind power plants in the mountains and protected areas. However, we think that he knows about them very well.
