Minister of Defense demanded to check fire safety

In his extraordinary statement regarding the explosions at the military base of the 111th Air Force Combat Wing in Nea Anchialos, the Minister of Defense said that he demanded a review of the fire safety plans of all military bases for the three branches of the armed forces, and asked the Chief of the General Staff to conduct an urgent administrative review.

“If someone is guilty of something, he will answer for it,” Nikos Dendias assured. He stated that for the 111th Fighter Wing itself, the issue of security was not at the moment. “I have asked for a review of the fire safety plans of all camps and the three branches of the armed forces. I want to assure you that the safety of personnel, facilities and equipment has been a long-standing priority. This is a top priority for this government and for everyone.”– he said.

Statement by Nikos Dendias

“In connection with yesterday’s incident, the fire at Nea Anchialos, on the territory of the ammunition storage camp of the 111th combat wing in the Karampa area in Magnesia, I received a detailed written report from the Air Force General Headquarters.

I approached the Chief of the General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, with a request to conduct an urgent administrative review. The decision to carry it out has already been made by the General Staff. The incident will be thoroughly investigated. If someone is guilty of something, he will answer for it. In full. I want to assure you that there were no security problems with the 111th Fighter Wing itself.

In a broader context: I demanded an audit of the fire safety systems of all formations, all camps, as well as all military installations of all kinds in our country. I asked for a re-examination of the fire safety plans of all camps, all units and all three branches of the Armed Forces.

I want to assure you: the security of the personnel, facilities and equipment of the armed forces is the absolute priority of the government of the Hellenic Republic. For the current government, this is the highest priority. It’s top priority for everyone“.

It is noted that in accordance with the order for the immediate conduct of a preliminary examination, it will be investigated how so many fires occurred in Magnesia at the same time, as well as the fact that these fires had an unusual scale and intensity, and caused incalculable damage to the natural environment, livestock, many buildings, industrial and handicraft facilities, crops and infrastructure, and resulted in the deaths of two people in Horostasi Almiros and Agios Georgios Fera, the Volos prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

As we reported earlier, the forest fire “swallowed” the ammunition depots of the Nea Anchialos air base, which led to the detonation of bombs, rockets and other weapons. In addition to ammunition, the fire destroyed fuel depots and airport tankers.
