‘Run and save your life’: British talk about ‘hell’ in Rhodes

The fire on Rhodes has been raging for a week now, and irreparable damage has been done to the island: in addition to burnt houses, trees, and the death of the famous Rhodes deer, the tourist season has also been lost.

Thousands of tourists (mostly British) were forced to evacuate due to the fire, and the British media do not hide the fact that “fiery hell” is happening on the island. From “flight to hell”, “our horror”, “hell on earth” to … “run for your lives”, some British newspapers write about the fire on the island of Rhodes, where the fire has been raging for the 7th day.

For its part, the government says that about 20 thousand people were able to evacuate the affected areas from the villages, leaving houses and hotels, but this does not seem to be enough for the British media, which broadcast footage of the fire.

The government, in an attempt to support workers and businesses, has returned to politics… Covid-19, as Minister of Labor Adonis Georgiadis previously announced: workers in businesses affected by the fire raging in Rhodes, as well as those in areas affected by fires in businesses that make it impossible for them to work, will receive an emergency allowance of 534 euros. The Minister of Labor and Social Protection on Monday morning was invited to Action24 TV channel, where he said: “Businesses that have been affected by fires and cannot work as before can suspend their employees for up to three months. Employees will receive an emergency allowance of 534 euros per month from the state.”

It should also be emphasized that where some business was destroyed, others find an opportunity to get usedOhigher profit, therefore, as the report shows BBC, British Touristswho are now arriving on the island for holidays, who have previously booked hotel stays, are forced to look for housing elsewhere, and prices have already tripled!

BBC aired an interview with a Briton who arrived in Rhodes on Saturday and said he had a hard time finding accommodation after being forced to leave his hotel. Prices for accommodation in Rhodes “tripled” overnight, he said, with only five places available for booking this morning. Oliver and his wife were taken from their hotel in Lindos shortly after midnight and managed to get a taxi to Rhodes town. He said: “We called 60 hotels from a taxi, and they were all busy.”

As they left the hotel, they saw flames in the sky, he said, adding: “It was beautiful, but scary… I’ve never seen anything like it.” As a result, on Saturday evening, the couple slept on rugs on the floor in the conference room!
