In Patras, the cries of people trapped under the rubble are heard – today, July 23, a section of the bridge collapsed and they were under the rubble. As of this hour, one person has died, four have been injured, and some are trapped among the collapsed structures.
On site tragic incident ambulances are on duty. Firefighters manually, with the help of a trained dog, search for people under tons of fallen concrete.
By order of the commander of 6ης ΥΠΕ, in addition to Agios Andreas, the Rio hospital was involved in transporting the victims. The rescue operation involved dozens of firefighters, 6η ΕΜΑΚ, many police officers who blocked traffic on nearby highways.
The twin bridges were previously found to have damage and static problems. Repairs to two bridges on the perimeter road (B601 and K635) started in 2021 at a cost of €6,517,287.49.
Both bridges are located at the beginning of the Patras bypass road, their length is 167 and 169 m on each transport branch.
