Antique icons tried to sell via the Internet

Two unique icons were put up for sale online for €3,000 by a 51-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. The couple was detained in Grevena when they were driving in a car.

The capture of the perpetrators was preceded by an investigation by Edessa Police Department officers, culminating in their arrest yesterday afternoon.

As it became known, the woman posted on the Internet a corresponding ad looking for buyers. According to the information, the icons were discovered and confiscated, after which they were examined by competent employees of the Ephorate of Antiquities. Experts have found that icons are subject to the protective provisions of the Law for the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in General. The first, apparently, depicts St. Euthymius, and the second – the holy “Handkerchief” (Ιερό “Μανδήλιο”) with the image of Christ.

A criminal case has been instituted against those arrested for violating the antiquities legislation. The accused were taken to the prosecutor’s office.
