The reason for the explosion of the bathyscaphe "Titanium"

Experts believe that one of the main reasons for the explosion of the Titan submersible was the design and materials. Perhaps it was because of this that the bathyscaphe did not have any permits.

The size of the Titan’s hull, intended for excursions to the sunken Titanic, was deliberately increased – so that there was more space for passengers inside the underwater vehicle. Mechanical engineer and marine engineer Jasper Graham-Jones draws attention to another important aspect:

“Also, they made it out of composites, and usually the case is made out of titanium. And they made it out of composites. Yes, composite is very strong. Yes, composite is very durable. But we have problems with composites, and the fact that Composites break down a little differently than other materials.”

Moreover, experts consider insufficient and the thickness of the case. Although it is about 13 cm, this is too small, experts say, given the force of pressure. Bathyscaphe “Titan”, in which five people went on an excursion, did not have any permits. And among “non-specialists” there is such an opinion:

As it became known, the American investor Jay Bloom refused to participate in the expedition on the Titan submersible with his son. Their places were taken by the Pakistani-born magnate Shahzadi Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman, informs Reuters.

For a year, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush tried to convince Las Vegas investor Jay Bloom to buy a few seats on the Titanic expedition. Bloom’s son, 20-year-old Sean, has been fascinated by the story of a doomed British passenger liner since childhood.

Bloom was intrigued by the offer, but the more he read about the Titan submersible, the more he became concerned about how safe it was. So he politely turned down the chance to join the last expedition of the season, citing scheduling conflicts, thus making room for Dawood and his son.

“Every time I see a photo of this Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son, I think how easily it could have been me and my 20-year-old son — if not for the grace of God,” Bloom said.
