Concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Maria Callas in Herodium

Roberto Alagna and Alexandra Kurzak presented excerpts from operas that made Maria Callas the most outstanding soprano in the history of world opera.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of leading soprano Maria Callas, the “Maria Callas Hellenic Association” held an event at the Herodos Attica Theater in Athens (Herodion). The president of the association, Liana Scurli, gave her whole heart and soul to preserving the memory and international character of the leading Greek soprano and made a great contribution to the completion of the Maria Callas Museum in the “heart” of Athens, which will open its doors in autumn 2023, according to a press release from the association.

Unlike other associations that operate mainly for PR purposes, the “Maria Callas Hellenic Association” works completely disinterestedly to promote the work of Maria Callas, manage and enrich the museum, and generally promote the work of Callas.

The concert took place as part of the Athens Festival and was attended by the world-famous tenor Roberto Alagna and the famous soprano Alexandra Kurzai, accompanied by the Athens Municipal Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nayden Todorov and 70 outstanding musicians. In the rich program of the evening, Roberto Alagna and Alexandra Kurzak performed excerpts from operas that established Maria Callas as one of the most famous sopranos in the history of world opera.

The concert took place in connection with the official inclusion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maria Callas in the UNESCO list of memorable dates for 2023. The purpose of the concert is to complete the construction of the Maria Callas Museum, which will open its doors in autumn 2023 in an emblematic neoclassical building belonging to the Municipality of Athens, located at 44 Mitropoleos Street, in the very “heart” of Athens.

The “Greek Association of Maria Callas” was founded in 2012 by a group of researchers of the life and work of the greatest diva of the lyrical theater of the 20th century, collectors and just her fans, following the model of similar organizations that have existed abroad for many years.

Among the goals of the association are the promotion of the Greek origin of Maria Callas, the preservation of the memory of the leading Greek soprano, who is undoubtedly considered the most recognized operatic artist in the world, the functioning and enrichment of the Maria Callas Museum in Athens, the establishment and granting of awards and scholarships in her memory.

At the same time, she created the “Junior Maria Callas” children’s section, with the aim of introducing children to opera and Maria Callas, as well as organizing educational programs and activities for children.

The concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Maria Callas at the Herodium Theater was a magical evening attended by artists and cultural figures, representatives of the government, institutions and cultural associations, artists and journalists.

The president of the Maria Callas Association, Liana Scurli, expresses her satisfaction with the success of the community efforts and thanks the members, sponsors and all the people who took part. The main sponsor of the evening was the group of defense and aerospace companies EFA GROUP.
