For security reasons, the Australian Parliament has developed and adopted in an accelerated mode a bill blocking the construction of the embassy of the Russian Federation in Canberra.
The government cites a threat to national security if the Russian embassy is located next to the parliament and considers this unacceptable. Although Canberra recognizes that the Russian Federation may be entitled to financial compensation. At the same time, Australia does not prohibit Russia from having diplomatic missions on its territory, but wants the new building not to be located next to the parliament.
The Russian embassy in Australia noted that this is “another step by Anthony Albanese (Australian Prime Minister) on the path of deliberate and consistent destruction of relations with Moscow.”
Recall that after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Canberra provided military assistance to Kyiv, and also imposed sanctions against hundreds of Russian individuals and legal entities.
