Summer has already come into its own, and on a hot day it is so nice to refresh yourself with ice cream! But prices for it this year “bite”, so not everyone can afford this pleasure.
Which, however, is not at all surprising – after all, prices for basic foodstuffs continue to move steadily upwards. The increase in the cost of ice cream, recorded in refrigerators and supermarket kiosks, is due to the increase in the cost of energy, which burdened enterprises and rising prices for raw materials. Edition CNN Greece prepared small overview based on data ΕΛΣΤΑΤ for May: how much is a sweet cool treat this year.
According to statistics for May, the general category “sweets-ice cream” recorded an increase of 10.3% year on year, and on a monthly basis, compared to April 2023, the category of ice cream rose by 5.3%.
The publication recorded increases by comparing this year’s prices for five packages of ice cream from different companies sold in large supermarket chains with last year’s. At the same time, promotions and discounts offered from time to time were not taken into account.
In one of the supermarket chains, packaged ice cream was sold in July 2022 at a price of €10.50. In June of this year, in the same supermarket, consumers can find it at a price of 13.47 euros. That is 2.97 euros more expensive.
A package with ice cream on sticks was sold in July 2022 for 7.27 euros, and today the corresponding package in the refrigerators of the same supermarket costs 8.67 euros, 1.4 euros more.
In another supermarket chain, ice cream in a package cost 8.49 euros in June 2022, and today it is sold in the same store for 10.62 euros. That is, 2.13 euros more expensive.
A pack of small ice cream cones last June cost 6.80 euros, and this year you have to pay 8.50 euros for it, that is, 1.7 euros more.
A package of family ice cream that cost 11.18 euros in June 2022 now costs 14.74 euros in the same chain, 3.56 euros more.
So the enjoyment of ice cream this year has become available not to everyone, it has become a real product “for the elite”.
