Thessaloniki: two cruise ships open the season

Today the port of Thessaloniki welcomes two cruise ships that have arrived at 2 different berths.

These are Hapag Lloyd Cruises’ Europa 2, which will use the new passenger terminal, and Celestyal Cruises’ Sky Crystal, which, like every Sunday, will use the ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑ passenger terminal. Thessaloniki expects more than 10 million euros in revenue from cruise tourism.

In the next two years, cruise ship calls to Thessaloniki will reach 200 (out of 70 expected this year alone), as agreed by representatives of cruise companies who spoke at the 7th Posidonia Sea Tourism Forum, held in April in Thessaloniki.

Representative ΟΛΘ Ms. Theodora Rigas informed that the 10th renovated berth will be opened from June 18. It will reach a length of 320 meters and a depth of 10 meters, which means that it will be able to take much larger vessels.

Also, according to the preliminary results of a study called Thessaloniki Cruise Tourism Socio-Economic Impact Assessment, the total positive impact for the city will be between 8.56 million euros (baseline scenario) and 10.82 million euros (positive scenario).

In terms of employment impact, this year’s cruise season, with a significant expected number of cruise ships calling at Thessaloniki’s port, will be 68, which is estimated to result in 111 full-time jobs supported annually on the cruise.
