An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Zakynthos at 7:53 am on Monday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea area, 78 kilometers west/southwest of Zakynthos.

The head of the Greek earthquake prevention and protection agency, Efthymios Lekkas, told the news site newsit.grthat the earthquake confirms the need to close famous beach Navagio due to the risk of landslides and rockfalls. Recall that in 2018 on the beach there was collapsedue to which 7 people were injured after a huge piece of rock fell next to them.

Miraculously, no one died. Even then, experts demanded that the beach be closed, but workers in the tourism sector insisted that the beach function as before. After that, several more collapses occurred on the beach after earthquakes. After lengthy disputes, the authorities came to the decision to close the beach for disembarking tourists. Now passenger boats can only approach Navagio Bay at a certain distance, which is estimated at about 40 meters from the coast. At the same time, swimming in the waters of the bay will be allowed, but also subject to the above distance, and walking along the coast is completely prohibited.

Beach closed March 16 after a new assessment of the situation with the alleged landslides. ΟΑΣΠ President Prof. Efthymios Lekkas warns that a collapse at the site could be catastrophic and talks about the risks that led to such an unpopular decision that provoked a strong reaction. He argues that the danger is clear:

“We have landslides repeatedly. They are part of the natural processes taking place in the bay”Navagio “, and the landslide material is the basis of the most beautiful beach in Greece. It is mainly processed by sea waves, and gives this pebble and transparency of the water. We made an attempt to delimit the zones on the beach, which we did. It did not work because there was no protection , as well as new large landslides.”

The professor spoke about how the search for a solution that would suit everyone, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“We are in the process of making a decision, therefore we are considering how Navagio will be used by businessmen and tourists. We are having a fruitful discussion both with the people of Zakynthos and with members of parliament, the governor of the region and the relevant ministries. I believe that a very good solution will be found for all, so that, on the one hand, there is no financial burden and impact on the inhabitants of Zakynthos, and on the other hand, the necessary security for tourists is provided.Because, you understand, if any incident occurs, it will have a catastrophic effect on the entire region on very long time”.

Name bays of navajo (Navagio) is translated from Greek as “shipwreck”, and this is not just. In 1983, the Panagiotis smuggling ship, which illegally transported cigarettes to Italy, was wrecked near the bay. When they discovered the offenders, they quickly boarded the boats and left the ship, sinking it along with the goods. Once, during a big storm, the ship “Panagiotis” washed up on the shore of the bay, where it has remained to this day.
33 years have passed since the shipwreck, and the bay with the broken ship entered the list of the most famous and best beaches in the world.
