US and EU to intervene in Greek-Turkish relations

Recent statements by foreign officials in previous days, with the most revealing speeches by Jens Plötner, diplomatic adviser to the German chancellor, and George Tsunis, US ambassador to Athens, reinforced the general realization that after the elections in Greece and Turkey, “major Western partners will push the direction of discussions for the resolution of Greek-Turkish disputes.

Tsunis told the 8th Delphi Economic Forum that there will be a “very serious attempt to resolve post-election issues”, adding that there are mutual desire for compromise.

In turn, Plötner, in an interview with the Sunday Greek edition Kathimeriniexpressed readiness contribute to a possible dialogue between Greece and Turkey.

Public statements by both Tsunis and Pletner are nothing more than a message about intentions already known in Athens, the Greek edition notes.

This is a discussion that has already taken place between Ankara and Athens, without any concrete initiative until the completion of the electoral processes in Greece and Turkey.

Given the current circumstances, it is clearer in Athens what could happen if Recep Tayyip Erdogan is re-elected than with a six-party coalition with Kemal Kilicdaroglu as the presidential candidate, but no development can be discounted, the Greek newspaper suggests.
