What are Greek doctors complaining about?

National Health System (ΕΣΥ) in our country is located in a sorry stateand, the government is completely indifferent to the shortage of personnel, which is why many doctors are forced to quit because they cannot endure inhuman working hours, the doctor believes Athanasius Kontaris.

Therapist of the 1st category of the regional medical center Serifos Athanasios Kontaris, who traveled all over Greece to help patients, was forced to resign, after which he sent an angry letter to the Minister of Health Thanos Pleuris.

The words of the doctor are confirmed by the Panhellenic Medical Association (ΠΙΣ), which calls the problem of layoffs in sparsely populated regions of the country and the reluctance of doctors to work there particularly serious. “These gaps cannot be filled by private doctors in these areas, nor by the transfer of doctors ΕΣΥ from branches in urban centers that are already understaffed,” the statement said. ΠΙΣ.

The result of this indifference, no matter how much T. Pleurys says that the health situation is in order, is that the inhabitants of these regions feel that they are left to fend for themselves, while the working conditions of doctors who are left behind, become even more difficult.”

Offer ΠΙΣ

Early February ΠΙΣ sent health ministers a comprehensive updated proposal that includes detailed financial, tax, housing, salary, scientific and administrative incentives to attract and retain physicians in these regions. The offer applies to both existing and new doctors.

An uncomfortably surprising element is that the state continues to pay a mocking allowance based on the basic salaries of doctors ΕΣΥ for 1983 rather than from current salaries, resulting in almost zero payout. Thus, to calculate the monthly allowance, it is assumed that the salary is:

  • 142.56 euros for a “category 2” doctor,
  • 142.56 euros for a “category 1” doctor,
  • director – 225.71 euros

And on these salaries, a coefficient from 8 to 50% is applied for a bonus starting from 11.40 euros and ending at 112.85 euros! For the intended adjustment of the mocking allowance to link it to the current base salary of doctors, the CPR provided for in article 54E of Law 4999/23 has been deferred.

Finally ΠΙΣ calls for the immediate publication of a new KYAso that a shameful allowance could be given to physicians ΕΣΥ free of taxes and based on current base salaries ΕΣΥ.

Disadvantages in Metaxas that employees complain about

But things are tragic in the cities too, because, according to the Association of Workers of the Main Cancer Hospital of Piraeus “Metaxas”, there is a serious shortage of personnel in the hospital: it is typical that there is only one nurse for three rooms in the endoscopy laboratory.

In particular, according to the statement, the hospital’s gastroenterology department has an endoscopic laboratory where all the usual endoscopic surgeries (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, rectoscopy, polypectomy (EMR), gastrostomy placement, ligation of varicose veins, APC are performed, dilatation of the stenosis).

Screening of the small intestine is also carried out using a wireless capsule and endoscopic (radial endo-ultrasound) ultrasound for the study (if indicated) of diseases of the upper and lower digestive tract.

Employees explain that one of the main problems of the laboratory is the insufficient staffing of the laboratory with nurses. “So far, the laboratory mainly employs 1 nurse who serves all 3 rooms (gastroscopy room, colonoscopy room, resuscitation room).

This colleague is responsible for preparing patients for examinations, preparing rooms, cleaning medical equipment, and sometimes she has to charge for medicines and supplies. It is not uncommon for her to be unable to cope with all the tasks due to her workload, so the department’s doctors come to help prepare the patients.”

Typically, there should be 1 nurse per ward to meet the needs of all patients, they explain. Given the increased demand for all of the above endoscopic procedures, both from inpatients and outpatients, the medical staff of the department could cover more cases, but in the end they have to deal with in their daily routine with:

  • lack of nursing staff,
  • problems associated with the timely and adequate supply of necessary materials,
  • inability to update medical equipment with modern machines and tools;
  • a general picture of the collapse, when the doctor can not even give out a simple endoscope.

Apart from all the other problems, the place also looks abandoned and The toilet hasn’t been working for a long time.

According to the Bank of Greece, at least 270,000 qualified professionals, including doctors and engineers aged 20 to 39, left Greece without prospects and found work in Germany, Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. The main reason, according to the experts who left, is the disproportionately lower wages. The measures taken by the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the promises of high wages, returned a small part of the specialists, but many of them returned back again.
