Population census: Greeks decreased by 3.1%

Greece has 10,482,487 permanent residents, according to official data from the latest 2021 census released by the Hellenic Statistical Office.

Compared to the 2011 census data, the country’s population has decreased by 3.1%, the figures show. Of the 10,482,487 people, 51.1% are women (5,356,510) and 48.9% are men (5,125,977). For detailed results in Greek, see Here.

In most regions of Greece there is a decline in population:

  • in the region of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace by 7.6%;
  • in Central Macedonia by 4.6%;
  • in Western Macedonia by 10.3%;
  • in the region of Epirus by 5%;
  • in Thessaly by 6.1%;
  • in Central Greece by 7.1%;
  • in the area of ​​the Ionian Islands by 1.6%;
  • in Western Greece by 4.6%;
  • in the Peloponnese by 6.6%;
  • in Attica by 0.4%;
  • in the North Aegean region by 2.2%.

Some regions are an exception. Population growth compared to 2011 was noted in the South Aegean region (by 6.1%) and in Crete (by 0.2%). Growth is also observed in a number of municipalities of tourist areas: Xanthi, Ioannina, Larisa, Chalkidea, Zakynthos, Argostoli, Patreon, Kalamata, Piraeus, Mytilini, Ikaria, Kalymnia, Karpathos, Kos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos and Lesser Cyclades, Paros, Rhodes, Tinos, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Rethymnon and Chania.
